Xabi Alonso eager to sign defender Man Utd ‘sold for peanuts’ for Real Madrid

Real Madrid have set their sights on Alvaro Fernandez, the former Manchester United defender currently playing for Benfica, as a key transfer target ahead of Xabi Alonso’s arrival this summer.

Alonso, who has guided Bayer Leverkusen to remarkable success in Germany, is expected to replace Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabéu when the Italian coach takes over the Brazil national team.

Alonso is known for his tactical preference for a back-three system, a formation he plans to implement in Madrid. With Trent Alexander-Arnold poised to take up a role on the right flank, Real Madrid are now eyeing Fernandez to fill the left-sided position in this setup.

Reports from Spain suggest Los Blancos are in pole position to sign the 22-year-old Spanish defender, who has impressed during his time at Benfica. Although his current release clause is set at €50 million, Madrid are hopeful they can negotiate a lower fee.

Fernandez has a past connection to Real Madrid, having come through their youth system before moving to Manchester United in 2020. Despite a promising stint with United’s U-23 squad and a successful loan at Preston North End, he never made a senior appearance for the Premier League side.

Last season, Benfica initially took him on loan and were so impressed they secured his services permanently for just £5 million. His performances in Portugal have turned heads, with some fans criticizing the decision to let him leave for such a modest fee.

While Manchester United hold a buyback clause valued at £15 million, it expires at the end of the year. However, Fernandez is reportedly not interested in a return to England, which strengthens Madrid’s position.

United have also signed Patrick Dorgu and are seeing progress from youngster Harry Amass, which may further diminish their interest in triggering the clause.

Real Madrid’s recruitment drive is already in motion, with Alexander-Arnold reportedly on the verge of completing a move from Liverpool.

The club has also secured the signing of Bournemouth talent Dean Huijsen, agreeing to meet his £50 million release clause as personal terms near finalization.

As Alonso prepares to shape his squad for the future, Fernandez is viewed as a perfect fit for the system and style he intends to bring to Madrid.

Fernandes and Maguire go wild at Carrington as they watch former Man Utd hero score incredible free-kick

Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire couldn’t hide their excitement after watching former Manchester United FC team-mate Juan Mata score a stunning free-kick in Australia.

Mata, now 37, currently plays for Melbourne Victory FC in the A-League. Having shared the dressing room with the popular Spaniard for years at Old Trafford, Fernandes and Maguire tuned in to watch Victory’s clash with Sydney FC.

The pair watched the game on a big screen at United’s training ground, Carrington Training Complex.

When Mata stepped up to take a free-kick in the 34th minute, Fernandes immediately began filming. Maguire asked: “Over the wall?” — to which Fernandes replied confidently: “Yeah, for sure. He has to.”

Moments later, Mata curled a superb effort into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations from his former teammates.

As Fernandes shouted with joy, Maguire exclaimed: “Oh my days!” The Portuguese midfielder then added: “The trust I have in this guy, filming live.”

Fernandes later posted the clip on Instagram, writing: “We just knew it that from there he doesn’t miss right @harrymaguire93?”

After the match, Mata was delighted to learn his old United teammates had been watching.

Smiling, the veteran said: “I love them and I’m happy they follow our games. I hope in the next game Bruno can score a similar goal!”

Mata left Manchester United in 2022 after making 285 appearances, scoring 51 goals and providing 44 assists across eight-and-a-half seasons. Since then, he has played for Galatasaray SK, Vissel Kobe and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

His popularity extends far beyond England. Former Galatasaray teammate Dries Mertens even travelled to Australia recently to visit Mata and watch him play as Melbourne Victory faced Brisbane Roar FC.

Despite Mata’s brilliant opener giving Victory the lead against Sydney FC, they were unable to secure the win. Charles Nduka doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, but quick goals from Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan earned Sydney FC a 2–2 draw.

Even at 37, Mata continues to shine. This season he has made 20 appearances, contributing four goals and 10 assists while rolling back the years with moments of trademark brilliance.
