Rio Ferdinand has candidly revealed the health scare that landed him in hospital last week, describing a terrifying ordeal that left him fearing for his life.
The 46-year-old former Manchester United star was due to provide live coverage for TNT Sports during Arsenal’s visit to Paris Saint-Germain, but instead found himself confined to a hospital bed.
Ferdinand shared a photo from the hospital, giving fans a thumbs up to reassure them, but the image followed a frightening series of symptoms brought on by a severe stomach virus.
What initially seemed like a minor illness quickly escalated into something far more intense. Speaking on his podcast, he detailed the distressing experience, explaining how the virus left him with migraines, vertigo, and relentless vomiting.
At one point, he believed he was moments away from losing consciousness.
Describing the situation, Ferdinand said he was in bed, unable to open his eyes, overwhelmed by an excruciating headache.
Having never experienced migraines before, he said it felt like his head was trapped in a vice, with pressure building to the point where it seemed his eyes might pop out.
The intensity of the symptoms escalated to such a degree that he began vomiting violently and suffering from severe disorientation.
The dizziness led to a sensation of spinning so intense he had to grip the bedsheets just to feel grounded.
As the illness persisted, he was advised to go to hospital, where medical staff quickly became concerned.
A doctor offered him an ambulance and mentioned the need for a brain scan, a moment that sent Ferdinand into a panic. What he assumed was a viral flu suddenly felt much more serious.
The football pundit admitted that the suggestion of a brain scan and ambulance hit hard. It was at that moment he realized the seriousness of his condition.
He was hospitalized for several days, where he continued to recover and undergo tests. Even typical comforts like hospital food provided no relief, with Ferdinand joking that not even soup and ice cream could lift his spirits.
While he’s now back on the mend, the experience served as a wake-up call. Ferdinand’s story highlights how quickly a seemingly ordinary illness can spiral into something serious.
It also shows the importance of seeking medical help when symptoms worsen unexpectedly. His openness about the ordeal has struck a chord with fans, who flooded his social media with messages of support.

Juventus are reportedly set to compete with Napoli for the signing of Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho this summer.

Is Juventus the right fit for Sancho?
Juventus manager Igor Tudor is preparing for his first full season in charge after leading the team to a top-four finish last term. Known for deploying a 3-4-2-1 formation, Tudor’s system does not traditionally utilize wide wingers like Sancho.
If he joins Juventus, Sancho would likely compete for one of the two attacking midfield spots behind the main striker—a role that currently sees strong competition from Kenan Yildiz, Francisco Conceicao, and Nico Gonzalez. Unless one of these players is sold, Sancho might struggle to find regular playing time in Turin.
