Patrick Dorgu could be the solution to Ruben Amorim’s tactical challenges at Manchester United.
Amorim, who took over at Old Trafford in November, has been eager to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation. However, the system hasn’t delivered the results he expected.
Initially, Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot were Amorim’s go-to choices for wing-back roles, but adjustments were needed. Amad has since moved into a more attacking role, and Dalot has struggled to adapt, forcing Amorim to explore alternative options.
Enter Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu, a player who has caught Amorim’s eye. Reports suggest that Manchester United has reached an agreement with the Serie A club for £29 million, with an additional £4 million in potential add-ons tied to Champions League qualification and Premier League appearances.
Dorgu, should the deal be finalized, could quickly establish himself in United’s starting XI. Statistically, the 20-year-old has outperformed current United players like Amad, Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui in key areas.
This season, Dorgu has won more duels, recovered possession more frequently, and made more tackles, crosses, and interceptions. His four goals and assists are a notable upgrade compared to Dalot and Mazraoui, who have yet to register any. Additionally, Dorgu has attempted 36 shots this season—more than any of his potential teammates.
What sets Dorgu apart is his well-rounded game. He is effective both in attack and defense, aligning perfectly with the qualities Amorim has been seeking. Adding to his appeal is an exceptional fitness record.
Alexander Riget, the technical director at Nordsjælland, where Dorgu spent his formative years, recently told Sport Witness: “He’s never injured—never. He played for Nordsjælland for six or seven years, and I can’t remember a single day where he was sidelined. That’s very rare for a young player.”
This level of durability will be a relief for Amorim, who has had to contend with recurring injury issues for Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw. Dorgu’s ability to stay fit could offer much-needed stability to United’s left flank.
Dorgu has also demonstrated his goalscoring ability on the international stage. On his senior debut for Denmark in September, he made an immediate impact, scoring with his first touch just 42 minutes after coming off the bench against Switzerland.
If the move is completed, Patrick Dorgu will become the first signing of the Ruben Amorim era at Manchester United, potentially marking the start of a new chapter for the club.
