Man Utd drop return date for Amad and Matthijs de Ligt
Manchester United are preparing for a significant boost as Amad and Matthijs de Ligt are expected to return from injury this week. Both players are being targeted for a comeback appearance against Brentford on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.
Amad, who suffered a severe ankle injury back in February, initially seemed destined to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery. However, the 22-year-old Ivorian has made an extraordinary recovery and is now poised to rejoin first-team training ahead of United’s critical Europa League encounter against Athletic Club on Thursday.
Matthijs de Ligt, 25, has also completed his rehabilitation from a foot injury that sidelined him for the past seven matches. The Dutch defender had become a key figure in Ruben Amorim’s defensive setup before his unfortunate setback.
His return, alongside Amad’s, comes at a crucial moment for Manchester United, who have struggled with form in recent months. The team’s performances have suffered notably during their absence, making the timing of their recovery all the more vital.
Reports from the Manchester Evening News suggest that United view the upcoming Brentford match as a valuable opportunity to ease both Amad and De Ligt back into competitive action.
Although the Europa League trip to Bilbao this week will likely come too soon for them, there is optimism that they could feature in the second leg of the semi-final at Old Trafford the following Thursday.
The importance of the Europa League has grown considerably for United in recent weeks, with the competition representing the club’s last realistic chance at silverware this season. The final is set to be staged at Athletic Club’s home ground, the Estadio de San Mamés, raising the stakes even higher for this semi-final showdown.
To reach the final, United must first overcome a strong Athletic Club side that currently sits fourth in La Liga after an impressive domestic campaign. Success would set up a clash against either Tottenham Hotspur or Norway’s Bodo/Glimt, who meet in the other semi-final.
United’s recent performances have left much to be desired, and Ruben Amorim will be counting on the reintegration of Amad and De Ligt to spark a turnaround. Both players had impressed under the Portuguese manager’s guidance before their injuries, offering hope that their return could provide the necessary spark to reignite United’s season.
In addition to Amad and De Ligt, there is further positive news on the injury front. Young midfielder Toby Collyer could also make his comeback this week after dealing with a minor issue sustained three weeks ago.
His return would offer the team added depth and energy in the midfield, an area where United have been noticeably thin recently.
The coming week will be pivotal for Manchester United as they look to salvage their season. The return of key players could not have come at a better time, with critical fixtures on the horizon and the chance to still finish the campaign on a high note.

Fernandes and Maguire go wild at Carrington as they watch former Man Utd hero score incredible free-kick (VIDEO)
Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire couldn’t hide their excitement after watching former Manchester United FC team-mate Juan Mata score a stunning free-kick in Australia.
Mata, now 37, currently plays for Melbourne Victory FC in the A-League. Having shared the dressing room with the popular Spaniard for years at Old Trafford, Fernandes and Maguire tuned in to watch Victory’s clash with Sydney FC.
The pair watched the game on a big screen at United’s training ground, Carrington Training Complex.
When Mata stepped up to take a free-kick in the 34th minute, Fernandes immediately began filming. Maguire asked: “Over the wall?” — to which Fernandes replied confidently: “Yeah, for sure. He has to.”
Moments later, Mata curled a superb effort into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations from his former teammates.
As Fernandes shouted with joy, Maguire exclaimed: “Oh my days!” The Portuguese midfielder then added: “The trust I have in this guy, filming live.”
Fernandes later posted the clip on Instagram, writing: “We just knew it that from there he doesn’t miss right @harrymaguire93?”
After the match, Mata was delighted to learn his old United teammates had been watching.
Smiling, the veteran said: “I love them and I’m happy they follow our games. I hope in the next game Bruno can score a similar goal!”
Mata left Manchester United in 2022 after making 285 appearances, scoring 51 goals and providing 44 assists across eight-and-a-half seasons. Since then, he has played for Galatasaray SK, Vissel Kobe and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.
His popularity extends far beyond England. Former Galatasaray teammate Dries Mertens even travelled to Australia recently to visit Mata and watch him play as Melbourne Victory faced Brisbane Roar FC.
Despite Mata’s brilliant opener giving Victory the lead against Sydney FC, they were unable to secure the win. Charles Nduka doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, but quick goals from Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan earned Sydney FC a 2–2 draw.
Even at 37, Mata continues to shine. This season he has made 20 appearances, contributing four goals and 10 assists while rolling back the years with moments of trademark brilliance.

Hansi Flick’s kind gesture towards injured Athletic Club player – caught on camera
Football often revolves around high-stakes moments, but occasionally the game pauses for humanity. That was the case during the clash between FC Barcelona and Athletic Club when an early injury to Unai Gómez briefly halted proceedings.
As Gómez limped off the pitch with assistance from Athletic’s medical staff, he passed by Barcelona’s technical area. There, Hansi Flick caught his attention.
The Barcelona coach offered a quick pat and a few encouraging words, acknowledging the player’s discomfort and the seriousness that injuries can bring.
Though brief, the gesture did not go unnoticed. Many fans praised Flick for showing empathy in the heat of competition, a reminder that beyond tactics and results, football still carries moments of respect and sportsmanship between professionals.
