Gary Neville blasts ‘pathetic’ Tottenham star during Liverpool clash

Published

Gary Neville did not hold back in his criticism of Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall during Spurs’ Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

Tottenham had set out with hopes of disrupting Liverpool’s title celebrations and got off to a dream start when Dominic Solanke powered home a bullet header to give them an early lead.

However, Liverpool wasted no time responding, with Luis Diaz finding the back of the net just four minutes later to restore parity.

The momentum quickly shifted in favor of Liverpool, and they seized the advantage midway through the first half. Alexis Mac Allister unleashed a stunning strike to put the hosts ahead, and shortly afterward, Cody Gakpo added a third goal that left Spurs scrambling.

It was during the buildup to Gakpo’s goal that Neville took aim at Bergvall, criticizing his poor defensive header at the front post during a Liverpool corner.

The Sweden international attempted to clear the ball but only succeeded in glancing it into a dangerous area. Gakpo, alert to the opportunity, capitalized with a sharp, clinical finish to extend Liverpool’s lead.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville did not mince words, describing Bergvall’s attempted clearance as “appalling” and “pathetic,” noting that the young midfielder appeared to duck his head rather than deal with the ball properly.

Neville questioned what Bergvall was thinking in that moment, emphasizing that it was a free header that instead led to a costly mistake for Tottenham. Despite the error, he was quick to praise Gakpo for reacting swiftly and finishing with precision.

Neville pointed out that Tottenham appeared to be the perfect opponents for Liverpool on the day, suggesting Spurs failed to anticipate danger and were punished for their mistakes by a ruthless Liverpool side.

Liverpool, undeterred by their shaky start, took firm control of the match and entered the half-time break with a commanding advantage.

With a win in sight, Liverpool moved closer to securing their 20th English league title, a milestone that would see them match the record currently held by their bitter rivals, Manchester United.

Outside Anfield, thousands of Liverpool fans had already begun gathering in anticipation of celebrating a potential title triumph. Unlike their previous Premier League victory, which was marred by empty stadiums due to Covid-19 restrictions, this time the fans were ready to be part of the historic moment.

Liverpool’s dominance, coupled with Tottenham’s lack of defensive discipline, highlighted the gap between the two sides. For Bergvall, it was a harsh lesson at one of the most iconic stadiums in England, and for Liverpool, it was another step closer to glory.

Fernandes and Maguire go wild at Carrington as they watch former Man Utd hero score incredible free-kick

Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire couldn’t hide their excitement after watching former Manchester United FC team-mate Juan Mata score a stunning free-kick in Australia.

Mata, now 37, currently plays for Melbourne Victory FC in the A-League. Having shared the dressing room with the popular Spaniard for years at Old Trafford, Fernandes and Maguire tuned in to watch Victory’s clash with Sydney FC.

The pair watched the game on a big screen at United’s training ground, Carrington Training Complex.

When Mata stepped up to take a free-kick in the 34th minute, Fernandes immediately began filming. Maguire asked: “Over the wall?” — to which Fernandes replied confidently: “Yeah, for sure. He has to.”

Moments later, Mata curled a superb effort into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations from his former teammates.

As Fernandes shouted with joy, Maguire exclaimed: “Oh my days!” The Portuguese midfielder then added: “The trust I have in this guy, filming live.”

Fernandes later posted the clip on Instagram, writing: “We just knew it that from there he doesn’t miss right @harrymaguire93?”

After the match, Mata was delighted to learn his old United teammates had been watching.

Smiling, the veteran said: “I love them and I’m happy they follow our games. I hope in the next game Bruno can score a similar goal!”

Mata left Manchester United in 2022 after making 285 appearances, scoring 51 goals and providing 44 assists across eight-and-a-half seasons. Since then, he has played for Galatasaray SK, Vissel Kobe and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

His popularity extends far beyond England. Former Galatasaray teammate Dries Mertens even travelled to Australia recently to visit Mata and watch him play as Melbourne Victory faced Brisbane Roar FC.

Despite Mata’s brilliant opener giving Victory the lead against Sydney FC, they were unable to secure the win. Charles Nduka doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, but quick goals from Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan earned Sydney FC a 2–2 draw.

Even at 37, Mata continues to shine. This season he has made 20 appearances, contributing four goals and 10 assists while rolling back the years with moments of trademark brilliance.
