Gary Neville delivers verdict on Manchester United transfer target Matheus Cunha
Gary Neville has thrown his support behind Manchester United’s pursuit of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, believing the Brazilian could be a smart solution to the club’s attacking struggles.
Despite signing a new contract earlier this year, Cunha included a £62.5 million release clause, indicating that a summer move was always possible.
The 25-year-old has caught the attention of several Premier League sides, with Newcastle United long seen as frontrunners for his signature.
However, United’s appeal appears to have grown stronger under the influence of incoming manager Ruben Amorim. Cunha, who previously played for Atlético Madrid, is reportedly eager to work under Amorim and take on a bigger challenge at a club fighting for trophies.
Cunha’s playing style and adaptability are qualities Neville believes Manchester United desperately need. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former United captain said the Brazilian forward fits the system and fills a crucial void in the squad.
With Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Marcus Rashford out of favor or sidelined, and Alejandro Garnacho carrying much of the creative burden alone, the team lacks balance and penetration. Cunha offers both, with the ability to take on defenders and drive through the middle of the pitch.
Amorim has had his own issues with United’s current squad, particularly their inability to convert chances. After a narrow 1-0 defeat to Wolves, the Portuguese coach emphasized that scoring is a team responsibility, not just a striker’s burden.
He pointed out that United frequently deploy three attackers and expect midfielders to chip in with goals too. But the stats don’t lie—this side is struggling in front of goal, and adding a versatile forward like Cunha could change that.
Cunha himself hinted at his ambition for a move earlier this year. In an interview with The Guardian, he revealed that he turned down January offers to stay loyal to Wolves during a relegation fight. He felt it wouldn’t have been right to walk away mid-season.
Still, he made it clear that he wants more from his career—trophies, big games, and a bigger platform. With Wolves now safe, the path is open for him to take that next step.
Neville sees Cunha as more than just a transfer target—he views him as a necessity. United need goals, movement, and energy in the final third.
They need someone who can beat a man and link play through the middle. With Amorim’s backing and Cunha’s hunger to evolve, the deal could be the spark Manchester United need to reignite their attack next season.

Fernandes and Maguire go wild at Carrington as they watch former Man Utd hero score incredible free-kick (VIDEO)
Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire couldn’t hide their excitement after watching former Manchester United FC team-mate Juan Mata score a stunning free-kick in Australia.
Mata, now 37, currently plays for Melbourne Victory FC in the A-League. Having shared the dressing room with the popular Spaniard for years at Old Trafford, Fernandes and Maguire tuned in to watch Victory’s clash with Sydney FC.
The pair watched the game on a big screen at United’s training ground, Carrington Training Complex.
When Mata stepped up to take a free-kick in the 34th minute, Fernandes immediately began filming. Maguire asked: “Over the wall?” — to which Fernandes replied confidently: “Yeah, for sure. He has to.”
Moments later, Mata curled a superb effort into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations from his former teammates.
As Fernandes shouted with joy, Maguire exclaimed: “Oh my days!” The Portuguese midfielder then added: “The trust I have in this guy, filming live.”
Fernandes later posted the clip on Instagram, writing: “We just knew it that from there he doesn’t miss right @harrymaguire93?”
After the match, Mata was delighted to learn his old United teammates had been watching.
Smiling, the veteran said: “I love them and I’m happy they follow our games. I hope in the next game Bruno can score a similar goal!”
Mata left Manchester United in 2022 after making 285 appearances, scoring 51 goals and providing 44 assists across eight-and-a-half seasons. Since then, he has played for Galatasaray SK, Vissel Kobe and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.
His popularity extends far beyond England. Former Galatasaray teammate Dries Mertens even travelled to Australia recently to visit Mata and watch him play as Melbourne Victory faced Brisbane Roar FC.
Despite Mata’s brilliant opener giving Victory the lead against Sydney FC, they were unable to secure the win. Charles Nduka doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, but quick goals from Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan earned Sydney FC a 2–2 draw.
Even at 37, Mata continues to shine. This season he has made 20 appearances, contributing four goals and 10 assists while rolling back the years with moments of trademark brilliance.

The Barcelona coach offered a quick pat and a few encouraging words, acknowledging the player’s discomfort and the seriousness that injuries can bring.
Though brief, the gesture did not go unnoticed. Many fans praised Flick for showing empathy in the heat of competition, a reminder that beyond tactics and results, football still carries moments of respect and sportsmanship between professionals.
