Chelsea vs Liverpool: Confirmed team news, predicted lineups and injuries

Published

on

Chelsea host Premier League champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in a critical fixture that could shape the Blues’ Champions League qualification hopes.

Enzo Maresca’s side currently sit sixth in the league standings, aiming to close the gap on fourth-placed Manchester City and remain within striking distance of Arsenal. Chelsea’s attention now turns back to league matters after a strong European performance during the week.

The Blues took a commanding lead in their Europa Conference League semi-final tie with a 4-1 away win over Swedish side Djurgarden. That performance puts them in pole position for a place in the final.

However, they had to navigate that match without first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who missed the trip after sustaining a knock in the 1-0 league victory against Everton. Forward Christopher Nkunku was also absent, but there is hope that both players will be available for the clash with Liverpool.

Right-back Malo Gusto made his return to action on Thursday night, coming off the bench after being sidelined since the win over Fulham last month. Meanwhile, winger Pedro Neto was given a rest midweek, and Noni Madueke was substituted at halftime.

His replacement, Nicolas Jackson, made the most of the opportunity by netting a second-half brace. Those changes hint that Maresca could choose to start both Neto and Madueke in Sunday’s match, with Jadon Sancho possibly dropping out of the starting eleven.

Chelsea, now fifth in the table, know a win against Liverpool would further boost their chances of returning to Europe’s top competition next season.

While the stakes are high for the Blues, Liverpool head into this fixture with the title already wrapped up and the pressure firmly off their shoulders. Arne Slot’s side will be eager to close their campaign on a high note, possibly with some squad rotation.

With Liverpool’s domestic duties effectively complete, Slot has the flexibility to test out his depth. Fringe players like Harvey Elliot and Federico Chiesa are in contention for starts and will look to impress ahead of next season.

Conor Bradley is also back in the squad after missing the 5-1 demolition of Tottenham that secured the league crown due to a minor injury sustained in training.

The predicted starting eleven for Chelsea includes Sanchez in goal, a backline of Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, and Marc Cucurella. Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández are likely to hold the midfield, with Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, and Noni Madueke operating behind Jackson up top.

Liverpool’s potential lineup features Alisson in goal, with a defense of Bradley, Ibrahima Konaté, Virgil van Dijk, and Kostas Tsimikas. In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister could be joined by Elliot, while the attack might feature Chiesa, Mohamed Salah, and Luis Diaz.

The match kicks off at 4:30pm on Sunday, May 3, and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event. Fans can stream the game via Sky Go and NOW TV.

Fernandes and Maguire go wild at Carrington as they watch former Man Utd hero score incredible free-kick

Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire couldn’t hide their excitement after watching former Manchester United FC team-mate Juan Mata score a stunning free-kick in Australia.

Mata, now 37, currently plays for Melbourne Victory FC in the A-League. Having shared the dressing room with the popular Spaniard for years at Old Trafford, Fernandes and Maguire tuned in to watch Victory’s clash with Sydney FC.

The pair watched the game on a big screen at United’s training ground, Carrington Training Complex.

When Mata stepped up to take a free-kick in the 34th minute, Fernandes immediately began filming. Maguire asked: “Over the wall?” — to which Fernandes replied confidently: “Yeah, for sure. He has to.”

Moments later, Mata curled a superb effort into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations from his former teammates.

As Fernandes shouted with joy, Maguire exclaimed: “Oh my days!” The Portuguese midfielder then added: “The trust I have in this guy, filming live.”

Fernandes later posted the clip on Instagram, writing: “We just knew it that from there he doesn’t miss right @harrymaguire93?”

After the match, Mata was delighted to learn his old United teammates had been watching.

Smiling, the veteran said: “I love them and I’m happy they follow our games. I hope in the next game Bruno can score a similar goal!”

Mata left Manchester United in 2022 after making 285 appearances, scoring 51 goals and providing 44 assists across eight-and-a-half seasons. Since then, he has played for Galatasaray SK, Vissel Kobe and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

His popularity extends far beyond England. Former Galatasaray teammate Dries Mertens even travelled to Australia recently to visit Mata and watch him play as Melbourne Victory faced Brisbane Roar FC.

Despite Mata’s brilliant opener giving Victory the lead against Sydney FC, they were unable to secure the win. Charles Nduka doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, but quick goals from Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan earned Sydney FC a 2–2 draw.

Even at 37, Mata continues to shine. This season he has made 20 appearances, contributing four goals and 10 assists while rolling back the years with moments of trademark brilliance.

Though brief, the gesture did not go unnoticed. Many fans praised Flick for showing empathy in the heat of competition, a reminder that beyond tactics and results, football still carries moments of respect and sportsmanship between professionals.
