Arsenal suffer another injury blow as midfield star suffers ‘setback’

Martin Odegaard has encountered a minor hitch in his effort to return fully fit ahead of Arsenal’s push for the Premier League title.

The Gunners captain has endured a frustrating spell with injuries this season, sitting out 11 matches since the start of the year due to recurring muscle and knee issues.

During the international break, it seemed he had turned a corner, featuring in the FA Cup loss to Southampton and starting again in the Champions League clash away to Sporting CP.

However, there were signs of discomfort during the match in Portugal, as the Norwegian playmaker was taken off with about 20 minutes left, making way for Kai Havertz. Concerns grew further when he was absent from first-team training on Thursday ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming league fixture against Bournemouth.

He wasn’t the only notable absentee, as Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, Piero Hincapie, and Riccardo Calafiori were all missing as well, having sat out recent matches.

Reports from Norway suggest the issue may once again be related to Odegaard’s knee, but national team manager Stale Solbakken has played down any serious concerns. He indicated that Odegaard picked up a knock in an awkward area but doesn’t expect it to keep him out for long, describing it as a minor issue that shouldn’t have significant consequences.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is set to address the media on Friday, where he’s likely to give a clearer update on Odegaard’s condition and the status of the other injured players.

Before the break, Arsenal’s hopes of a historic quadruple took a hit after losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City and crashing out of the FA Cup against Southampton. Despite those setbacks, they remain in a strong position in the league, holding a nine-point lead at the top as the season resumes this weekend.

Fernandes drops major hint on his Man Utd future after ‘hurt’ of transfer drama

Fernandes drops major hint on his Man Utd future after ‘hurt’ of transfer drama… thanks to kids’ Mancunian accent

Bruno Fernandes has made it clear that both he and his family feel fully settled in Manchester, reinforcing his connection to the club amid ongoing speculation about his future.

The Manchester United captain had previously indicated in October that he would review his situation after the World Cup, but questions have continued due to his current deal, which runs until 2027 with the option of an extra year. Interest from Al-Hilal last summer only added to the uncertainty, though he ultimately turned down the move after being assured by then-manager Ruben Amorim that he remained central to the club’s long-term plans.

The 31-year-old stirred conversation again in December when he revealed that United had been open to letting him go following a £100 million bid from the Saudi side. He admitted feeling disappointed with how the situation was handled, suggesting the club failed to take a clear stance and left the decision in his hands.

Despite that episode, there is currently no strong push from either side to part ways, especially with United on course to return to the Champions League next season. Fernandes himself appears aligned with that direction, recently explaining on the Men in Blazers podcast that his family has truly settled in the North West.

He shared that living in Manchester feels natural for him, adding that his children are especially comfortable there and have fully embraced life in the city. He even joked that hearing them speak with local accents made him realize they might feel even more Mancunian than he does.

Fernandes has been married to Ana since 2015, years before his move from Sporting CP to Old Trafford, and they have two children together. Ana reportedly played a key role in his decision to remain at the club last year.

There is also a growing belief that securing Champions League football again—something United haven’t achieved since the 2023/24 season—would effectively end any lingering doubts about his future.

Looking ahead, Fernandes hinted at expected squad changes, suggesting the club will bring in reinforcements, particularly in midfield, while also exploring options on the left wing and at full-back to strengthen the team.

Interim boss Michael Carrick, who could be handed the role permanently, has already emphasized the importance of keeping the Portuguese star. He stressed that Fernandes is a vital figure for the team and not someone the club would want to lose as they build for the future.

On the pitch, Fernandes continues to deliver at a high level. He is among the leading contenders for the Premier League Player of the Season award alongside Declan Rice and William Saliba. Last season, he claimed the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the fourth time, putting him in the same bracket as David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo in that regard.

With seven matches remaining, Fernandes is also closing in on a major milestone, needing just four more assists to match the Premier League record of 20, currently held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. He also подчеркнул the importance of retaining key teammates, highlighting the need for the club to secure Harry Maguire on a new contract.

Ademola Lookman to face Man Utd as Stockholm clash confirmed

Ademola Lookman is set for an early test against Premier League opposition after his move to Atletico Madrid, with the Spanish side scheduled to face Manchester United in a pre-season clash ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.

The match is slated for Saturday, August 1, 2026, and will take place at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. It forms part of United’s European tour and will be contested under the Snapdragon Cup banner. The game also sees Atlético return to the Swedish capital for the first time since their 2-1 friendly win over Juventus back in 2019.

Heading into the fixture, Atlético will be aiming to carry momentum from what could be a highly successful end to their current season. They have already reached the Copa del Rey final and hold a strong 2-0 advantage over Barcelona following the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. With silverware within reach, Diego Simeone and his squad will be hoping to wrap up the season on a high note before shifting focus to preparations for the new campaign.

On the other side, Manchester United have shown clear improvement in recent weeks under interim manager Michael Carrick. The former midfielder has brought more attacking sharpness and defensive stability to the team, helping the Red Devils push firmly for a place in next season’s Champions League with a string of strong performances.

Lookman, meanwhile, is expected to benefit from a full summer break, largely due to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The forward will be eager to make an immediate impact when the new season begins, using the pre-season schedule as a platform to settle quickly into his new environment.

Luis Enrique admits ‘surprise’ with Arne Slot decision after PSG beat Liverpool

Luis Enrique admitted he was caught off guard by Arne Slot’s tactical approach during Liverpool FC’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

PSG delivered a commanding performance in Paris, with Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finding the net in each half to secure the win.

Slot opted for a significant tactical shift, deploying a back three of Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, with Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez operating as wing-backs. Despite the defensive setup, Liverpool struggled badly, failing to register a single shot on target and seeing very little of the ball.

Reflecting on the match, Enrique noted that it was the first time this season Slot had used a back three, suggesting the decision showed Liverpool were experimenting in response to PSG’s strengths. He added that such tactical adjustments are expected, as many teams try to adapt their shape when facing his side.

In a separate interview, the PSG boss praised Slot as a high-level coach but reiterated his surprise at the system change, while also acknowledging Liverpool’s physicality and individual quality. He described the contest as an enjoyable tactical battle despite the one-sided outcome.

Slot later explained that his decision was driven by the need to deal with PSG’s explosive pace, particularly from Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes on the flanks. By using Frimpong and Kerkez in deeper roles, he aimed to apply aggressive pressure while still having defensive cover.

However, the plan backfired at key moments. Slot admitted that whenever Liverpool tried to press high, they were repeatedly exposed by PSG’s speed and movement, leading to several dangerous chances.

He also pushed back against the focus on formations, arguing that the system can be interpreted differently depending on perspective. In his view, the setup could just as easily be seen as a variation of a 4-3-3, rather than a strictly defensive five-at-the-back approach.

Ultimately, Slot pointed to the fine margins at this level, suggesting that any alternative approach — particularly one with more attacking wingers — could have left his side even more vulnerable against PSG’s relentless pace.
