Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has identified two key weaknesses he believes will prevent Chelsea from winning the Premier League title this season.
The Blues started the campaign strongly under Enzo Maresca and even had an opportunity to go top of the league in December. However, their form has dipped significantly since then. Chelsea have managed just two wins in their last eight matches and were recently knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton.
Maresca now faces a major challenge in keeping Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification, with Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Nottingham Forest all competing for the coveted spots. Missing out again would be a significant setback for the club.
Carragher, speaking on The Overlap US, admitted he never saw Chelsea as serious title contenders despite their promising start.
“There was a moment when they could have gone top of the league,” he said. “It looked like everything was coming together, and I thought they might turn it into a three-horse race with Liverpool and Arsenal.
“But I have to say, I’ve been really disappointed. I never believed they could win the league because of their goalkeeper and center forward—they’re just not at the required level. Even their center-backs aren’t quite there.”
Chelsea’s goalkeeping issues have been a concern all season. Robert Sanchez, who was booed by fans after a costly mistake against Manchester City, has since been dropped, with Filip Jorgensen now set for a run in the starting lineup.
With their title hopes fading, Chelsea must now regroup and focus on securing a top-four finish to avoid another season outside the Champions League.
